People searching for a “DGT board alternative” are often not looking for a winner in a technology contest. They are trying to solve a practical problem: how can we record or broadcast this game with the budget, volunteers, venue and equipment we actually have?

Professional electronic boards earned their place

Electronic boards have supported major tournaments, live commentary and professional chess coverage for years. They are built for direct piece sensing, established event workflows and dependable multi-board deployment when installed and operated correctly.

That contribution should not be diminished simply because a different approach is becoming possible. ChessZCam is not “anti-DGT,” and zonChess is not affiliated with DGT. We are exploring another entry point for situations where a full electronic-board setup is not yet practical.

Many chess events live between “nothing” and “professional installation”

A school may want to stream one final board. A small club may need a PGN for its weekly content. A parent may want to preserve a child’s game. An independent creator may travel with a phone and laptop but no dedicated chess hardware.

These users do not necessarily reject professional systems. They may simply need a smaller first step that uses equipment they already own.

Using a camera creates flexibility—and new responsibilities

A camera-based system can travel easily and work with familiar chess sets. It can also be affected by shadows, glare, hands covering the board, displaced pieces or a tripod that moves during the game.

A responsible product should therefore include ways to detect uncertainty, review the position and correct mistakes. It should not convert an AI guess into a confident public claim.

  • Use even lighting and avoid strong reflections.
  • Keep all sixty-four squares visible throughout the game.
  • Place the tripod outside the players’ normal movement path.
  • Assign someone who can verify the digital position when needed.

A simple decision guide

Choose a professional electronic-board setup when…
  • the event is high stakes;
  • many boards must be transmitted;
  • the venue has trained operators and infrastructure;
  • maximum reliability justifies dedicated hardware.
Consider a phone-camera bridge when…
  • you want one or a few featured boards;
  • you need a portable creator or club workflow;
  • you already own the basic devices;
  • you can accept beta limitations and human verification.
Use both when…
  • electronic boards cover the main event;
  • a flexible camera setup supports side rooms, analysis or extra content;
  • you want a fallback or experimental workflow without changing the core system.

Does the solution help more chess happen?

The best technology choice is not always the most advanced one. It is the one that matches the consequences of failure, the skills of the operator, the available budget and the audience’s needs.

For a national final, the standard may be different from a club training night. For a permanent venue, dedicated hardware may make sense. For a creator moving between halls, portability may matter more.

The goal is not to replace every tool with one tool. The goal is to make sure there is a sensible tool at every stage of the chess journey.
